SOUTH BEND — This is an official press release from the U.S. Department of Justice (Office of Legal Policy), published as received.

SOUTH BEND – The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana is proud to announce that Joseph P. Falvey, currently serving as the Chief of the Appellate Division of the United States Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Indiana, has been nominated by President Donald J. Trump to serve as a United States District Judge for the Northern District of Indiana.

Mr. Joseph Falvey has left a profound mark on the region's federal judicial landscape by successfully upholding critical legal standards, protecting public safety, and promoting law and order. His extraordinary dedication to public service—spanning his leadership in the appellate division, his prior service as a Marine Corps Officer, and his selection as a Pat Tillman Scholar—exemplifies a rare blend of exceptional legal acumen and deep personal humility. Through his meticulous stewardship of federal appeals and unwavering commitment to the U.S. Constitution, Falvey has set a commendable standard of excellence that has fortified the rule of law across the state.

"Joe Falvey has demonstrated exceptional leadership at the helm of our Appellate Division, embodying a true lifetime of service. His flawless judgment, steadfast character, and unyielding commitment to the rule of law make him an outstanding choice for the federal bench, and we are confident he will serve the Northern District of Indiana with distinction," said United States Attorney Adam L. Mildred.

Mr. Falvey’s work in the Department of Justice has included service as Appellate Division Chief, Acting Criminal Division Chief and Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Northern District of Indiana. Mr. Falvey also previously served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and as a clerk to Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts, Jr., Judge Thomas B. Griffith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and Judge Dabney L. Friedrich of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He is a graduate of Yale Law School and the University of Notre Dame.

The Northern District of Indiana benefits from a strong legacy of Bench-to-Bar service, with over a third of its district judges having served as federal prosecutors. Mr. Falvey’s shared background in the Hammond, South Bend, and Fort Wayne divisions brings firsthand trial experience to the bench. It reflects the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s track record of cultivating legal leaders who deeply understand federal litigation, civil enforcement, and the rule of law.

His nomination now moves to the United States Senate for consideration.
