ALBUQUERQUE — This is an official press release from the U.S. Department of Justice (USAO - New Mexico), published as received.

ALBUQUERQUE – A Mescalero woman has been charged with assault by strangulation after allegedly attacking and choking the victim, causing serious injuries that required treatment at a trauma center.

According to court documents, on or about March 24, 2026, Julianna Venego, 41, an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, allegedly assaulted and strangled the victim during an incident at her residence. Authorities allege that during an argument, Venego struck the victim, wrapped a cord around the victim's neck, and prevented the victim from leaving the residence. The victim reported experiencing restricted breathing, dizziness, and fear of losing consciousness during the assault.

After escaping the residence, the victim sought help and later reported the incident to law enforcement. The victim was transported to a local hospital and subsequently transferred to a trauma center for specialized treatment. Medical records indicated the victim suffered injuries consistent with strangulation, including an occluded vertebral artery, neck trauma, bruising, and other injuries.

Venego is charged with assault by strangulation and suffocation. She will remain in custody pending trial, which has not been scheduled. If convicted of the current charge, Venego faces up to 10 years in prison.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison made the announcement today.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, investigated this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tanisha V. Henson is prosecuting the case.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
