OPELIKA, ALA. — This is an official press release from the U.S. Department of Justice (Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)), published as received.

OPELIKA, Ala. – A federal jury has convicted a Lee County man on drug trafficking charges following a trial in Opelika, Alabama.

On October 29, 2026, Kenneth Byron Halsey, 50, of Smiths Station, Alabama, was found guilty of distributing 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.

Evidence presented at trial established that the Halsey sold 50 grams or more of methamphetamine to two individuals at his residence in Smiths Station. During the trial, jurors were shown a video recording depicting the drug transaction.

A sentencing hearing will be scheduled in the coming months. At that hearing, Halsey faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison. A federal district judge will determine the sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. There is no parole in the federal system.

The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office investigated this case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Faith Mote and John J. Geer III prosecuted the case for the Middle District of Alabama.
