DETROIT - — This is an official press release from the U.S. Department of Justice (USAO - Michigan, Eastern), published as received.

DETROIT -- In keeping with past practice, U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr. today announced the efforts of the U.S. Attorney's Office of the Eastern District of Michigan to handle complaints of election fraud and voting rights concerns in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters in Washington.

“Free and fair elections are the foundation of our republic,” Gorgon said. “The United States Department of Justice will always comply with, and will continue to enforce, federal law.”

Federal law prohibits:

  • Non-citizen voting;
  • Voting more than once;
  • Stuffing ballot boxes;
  • Changing ballot markings or otherwise tampering with ballots;
  • Giving false information when registering to vote or casting a ballot;
  • Threatening voters with physical or financial harm;
  • Intentionally lying about the time, place, or manner of an election to prevent qualified voters from voting.

The Department's long-standing Election Day Program seeks to ensure public confidence in the integrity of the election process by providing local contacts for the public to report possible election fraud and voting rights violations.

The local FBI field office can be reached by the public regarding allegations of election fraud and other election abuses at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

Complaints about possible violations of federal voting rights laws can be made directly to the Civil Rights Division in Washington, DC by phone at 800-253-3931 or by complaint form at https://civilrights.justice.gov/.
